The Gastronomic Surprises Of The Balaerics: Discover The Raones

The Gastronomic Surprises Of The Balaerics: Discover The Raones

Mallorca and Ibiza have evolved dramatically from the ’70s destination of mass tourism and hog roasts, sangria and paella.

World-class chefs, like the Ferran Brothers of El Bulli fame and Paco Ronchero, have honed in on the pearls of the Mediterranean, not only because of the year-round fantastic weather we are blessed with here in the Balaerics, but also because of the abundance of delicacies to be found in the wild.

We personally have found that one of the jewels of the Balearics is the ever so elusive Raones. Many people already associate the Balearic Islands with incredible seafood, but they may be surprised to hear there is a local delicacy that they are not aware of – the elusive Raones fish. Native to the Ibiza and Formentera Islands, these delicious fish are protected and so can only be eaten for a short time towards the end of summer/early autumn. In Mallorca, fish like these are enjoyed fried and served with fresh lemon – the perfect beachside snack.

Discover the delicious Raones fish

Everyone eagerly awaits the end of September in Spain for one reason – this is the time for Raones fishing. With an exquisitely light and fresh taste, the promise of these Mallorca fish being available once more for another year has everyone on tenterhooks. They are comparable to white truffles in Piedmont – an exquisite delicacy that is sourced and celebrated once a year.

Sadly the Raones fishing is now over, however if you didn’t get a chance to try one this year, why not book in a yacht charter for early Autumn next year, offering you a unique opportunity to taste these Mallorca fish while travelling in luxury.

Where are the best places to try Raones?

In Palma/Mallorca:

– Es Marcat des Peix

This brilliant seafood restaurant allows you to pick the local catch you want before cooking it in front of you. A must-visit for lovers of anything fishy!

– La Parada del Mar

With charming service and seafood cooked to perfection, this little eaterie will surely be a highlight of your Mallorcan adventure.

– Marisqueria Bonsol

You’ll be amazed at the range of super-fresh seafood on offer here, including our beloved Raones during the season.

In Ibiza/Formentera:

– Es Xarcu

A sumptuous meal combines with a stunning beachfront view to make this one of our favourite places to eat Raones.

– Es Torrent

Another beautiful seaside dining spot, tucked away in a small, romantic bay in Ibiza.

– Es Calo

There’s a reason this is the most popular seafood restaurant in Formentera! Be sure to book, as this place fills up fast.
